Seul contre Tous plot

"In the bowels of France."

A 50-year-old horse butcher is released from prison after an attempted murder of his autistic daughter's rapist. Destitute and without work, he is on the street. All he has is a gun and three bullets; an armed time bomb that draws energy only from hatred and retaliation. In his eyes, everything that was dear to him has been taken from him by society. "Morality is a tool for the rich, and justice the gun in my hand."

Had first seen Irreversible and was curious about the predecessor. That's why I thought this film was a stepping stone to Irreversible. I did get quite stuffy again when suddenly "You have 30 seconds left to leave the projection of this film". With the horrific scenes from Irreversible in mind, I thought "oh dear, not again". Luckily it wasn't that bad, although the ending (and the whole movie for that matter) doesn't make you any happier.

All in all, a finger exercise for Irreversible, who continues to fascinate by the extreme train of thought of the main character, but is never really surprising. As a viewer you are dragged into the depressing world of the main character, but nevertheless I did not feel really involved anywhere.
By the way, is the main character in this movie the same as in the opening scene of Irreversible, in that cell? There he tells that he slept with his daughter and is therefore in jail, but in this film he shoots himself in the head, right??

Remains beautiful, in its own way.

Noé is by far my favorite director. Since then, his style has evolved and perfected even further, but that does not alter the fact that his debut film is also simply a masterpiece. Few directors can evoke so much emotion in me time and again.

It starts off mildly, but gets more and more bleak as the film progresses. Nahon is in a class of his own, puts in a great performance as a blunt, but actually pathetic bastard. The almost continuous voice-over is essential here. Nahon's train of thought is simplistic, oversimplified, yet feels genuine. Can laugh heartily at the people who seek serious social criticism in this, since it seems to me that just about anyone with a not too low IQ can see that Nahon's views are short-sighted and ill-considered. But that's what makes it so gripping. A glimpse into the life of a dangerous madman, a ticking time bomb. Yet you feel pity, since he is only a kind of victim of his own misery. Beautifully illustrated, how someone can behave when they have nothing left to lose.

Criticisms of Noé's in-your-face approach are understandable, although I don't agree with them of course. to provoke? Well .. could well be, but personally I don't even see that whole word as something negative. Noé spares no viewers, and that is of course noticeable. I can really appreciate it, as few directors have the guts.

Furthermore, the film is visually perfectly designed, and the embrace towards the end is beautiful, especially because it is about the only moment in the film where relief is offered from the unpleasant atmosphere. There is a strong contrast to the rest of the film at that moment. I can't help but give this Noé 5.0* after watching it for the second time. Replaces Enter the Void in my top 10 for now.

How Gaspar Noé creates so much tension here in 1 minute for the rest of the film is really amazing and immediately grabs you by the throat. For me Taxi Driver 2.0, what a performance by Philippe Nahon! Actually nice to see this last because the style was clearly evaluated later to an even higher level.
